Cory Turner Excited For Final Ohsweken and SOS Points Nights

CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (September 7, 2018) – With the momentum of a successful Labour Day weekend that included a top-five and four top-10 finishes, Cory Turner is anxious to hit the track again for championship weekend. The final points races of the season at Ohsweken Speedway and with the Southern Ontario Sprints at Merrittville Speedway are scheduled for Friday, September 7 and Saturday, September 8.

Entering Friday’s race, Turner is currently third in the Ohsweken standings and trailing Jim Huppunen by just six points for second, which equates to three finishing positions on the race track.

“We have to keep the car in one piece,” Turner stated. “This is the car we want to finish the year on. It’s been good on the small tracks, so hopefully Friday it will be good at Ohsweken too. We’re going to try and outrun Jimmy to get second.”

The race is also an important tune-up for next weekend’s $10,000-to-win 14th annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals presented by Arrow Express. Turner will look to nail down the setup on his KT Gas & Convenience/Silo Wireless No.97 for this championship weekend and for next weekend’s Ohsweken season finale.

“Hopefully we can run well Friday and get a good tune-up for the Nationals,” Turner said. “We are running well right now and building momentum for these next two weekends. We’re really excited for it all.”

On Saturday, Turner will then take the Mobil 1/King’s Wood Products No.97 to his former home track of Merrittville Speedway in search of his first career Sprint Car championship with the Southern Ontario Sprints. Turner holds a more than 50-point lead at the top of the SOS standings over his younger brother, Ryan Turner entering the final race of the season. Turner is excited for the race, but knows there’s still plenty of work to be done.

“If I can run in the top-10 again like we have all year with the SOS, than we will be in good shape,” Turner said. “There’s still 35-40 laps to run on Saturday after we race Friday. I’m lucky I have a lot of laps there, but I’ll have to keep my eyes open to make sure we run it clean.”

Quick Recap

Last weekend, Turner ran a pair of Features at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, August 31, including a make-up event from July 27. He earned seventh and eighth-place finishes in the two events.

“We were good at the beginning of the night, but we kind of fell off a little bit,” Turner explained of the Friday action. “We were better than the previous Friday.”

Then, he travelled east to compete with the SOS in the annual Labour Day Classic Weekend at Brighton Speedway with full shows on back-to-back nights Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2. He started with a second-place finish on Saturday night and a sixth-place result Sunday.

“Saturday, we were really running down the leader, Steve Lyons,” Turner said. “The second half of the race, my car came in nicely and I ran him down from almost half a lap back. I lost by about a car length and a half at the line. We were absolutely ripping the last 10 laps and I was really happy with how the car got better.”

For complete event details, visit www.ohswekenspeedway.ca and www.merrittvillespeedway.com.
Hansen Scores First Career Win;
Evans Claims Inaugural AST Championship

Historic Night at Ohsweken Caps Fantastic First Season for Action Sprint Tour

By Clayton Johns

OHSWEKEN, Ont. (September 7, 2018) – Josh Hansen, a 16-year-old driver from Beamsville, Ont., took full advantage of a Lucas Smith misstep on lap 17 and led the final four laps to score his first career Sprint Car win in the final race of the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com inaugural season at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, September 7.

Smith and Liam Martin lined up on the front row for the 20-lap championship Feature which saw Shone Evans, Aaron Turkey and Jacob Dykstra all enter with a chance at the inaugural series title. Both Smith and Martin declined to take the Durnin Motors Front Row Challenge and drop to the 12th starting position for a shot at a $500 win bonus.

The opening lap was disastrous for contenders Turkey and Dykstra, who were collected in a backstretch incident that also involved Trevor Young. Both drivers suffered race-ending damage, eliminating them from championship contention and handing the title to Evans.

The ensuing restart saw Martin drive to the inside in a bid for the lead, but Smith held off the challenge with a strong drive up top. Then on lap four it was Baily Heard driving to second past Martin following an excellent multi-lap battle before the caution waved the following lap when Holly Porter spun to bring out the yellow flag.

The restart saw Heard challenge Smith to the inside and the two drivers raced side-by-side until the next caution on lap eight when Brad Herron spun in turn three. The final restart on lap eight saw Heard try to drive outside Smith in turn one, but the challenge was unsuccessful.

Smith opened a considerable lead before ninth-starting Josh Hansen raced past Heard to take second on lap 14. Then, on lap 17, Smith stepped over the banking in turn three, allowing Hansen to use the bottom lane and drive to the lead. Smith held on to the second spot, but the 16-year-old Hansen ran a flawless final three laps to score his first career Sprint Car win while Smith settled for second ahead of Shone Evans.

With his third-place finish, Evans claimed both the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com title and the Ohsweken Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Car 2018 Championship. Evans’ podium finish would have been enough to earn both titles, even if Turkey and Dykstra would have finished first and second. Ryan Hunsinger drove from the 21st starting spot to fourth while Baily Heard took a fifth-place result.

Liam Martin, Jordan Hill and Hannah Ferrell were Heat Race winners earlier in the night while Aaron Turkey won the B-Main.

Stay tuned to www.ActionSprintTour.com for details regarding the Series year-end payouts and banquet information.
_________________

Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com Race Report
September 7, 2018
Ohsweken Speedway – Ohsweken, Ontario, Canada
Total Entries – 28

Entry List
No. Name – Hometown
08 Steven Beckett – Fonthill, Ont.
1 Holly Porter – Delhi, Ont.
1eh Paul Klager – Beamsville, Ont.
3b Blaine Barrow – Welland, Ont.
4 Hannah Ferrell – Vanessa, Ont.
5 DJ Christie – Beachville, Ont.
5d Jacob Dykstra – Port Colborne, Ont.
7 Caleb Wood – London, Ont.
9 Paul Ballantyne – Brantford, Ont.
9c Brian Nanticoke – Ohsweken, Ont.
10 Lofton Schuts – Oakland, Ont.
12 Brad Herron – Waterford, Ont.
24 Jeff Newham – Windsor, Ont.
28 Jordan Hill – Ohsweken, Ont.
29 Liam Martin – Binbrook, Ont.
38 Derek Miller – Ohsweken, Ont.
43h Ryan Hunsinger – Stouffville, Ont.
49L Lucas Smith – Brantford, Ont.
51 Trevor Young – Ancaster, Ont.
56 Dereck Lemyre – Hamilton, Ont.
68 Aaron Turkey – Ohsweken, Ont.
69 Josh Hill – Ohsweken, Ont.
70 Baily Heard – Niagara Falls, Ont.
70mm Dave McKnight Jr. – Brampton, Ont.
74 Rob Neely – Rockwood, Ont.
87x Shone Evans – Scotland, Ont.
88h Josh Hansen – Beamsville, Ont.

A-Feature (20 laps – No Time)
Finish. # Name (Starting Position)
1. 88h Josh Hansen (9); 2. 49L Lucas Smith (1); 3. 87x Shone Evans (14); 4. 43h Ryan Hunsinger (21); 5. 70 Baily Heard (8); 6. 28 Jordan Hill (3); 7. 4 Hannah Ferrell (5); 8. 29 Liam Martin (2); 9. 1 Holly Porter (15); 10. 56 Dereck Lemyre (12); 11. 1eh Paul Klager (16); 12. 5 DJ Christie (10); 13. 08 Steven Beckett (17); 14. 12 Brad Herron (24); 15. 7 Caleb Wood (6); 16. 70mm Dave McKNight Jr. (20); 17. 9c Brian Nanticoke (11); 18. 38 Derek Miller (22); 19. 9 Paul Ballantyne (7); 20. 74 Rob Neely (13); 21. 3b Blaine Barrow (4); 22. 51 Trevor Young (23); 23. (August 28, 2018) – The Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com will continue its 2018 season with the ninth race of the inaugural campaign when the upstart tour makes its third and final stop of the season at Humberstone Speedway in Port Colborne, Ont. on Sunday, September 2.

Entering the final week of the season, starting at Humberstone and then the championship deciding race at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, September 7, a three-car battle has developed for the first Action Sprint Tour championship. In less than two weeks time, the final standings will determine which driver claims the winner’s share of the $10,000 Action Sprint Tour point fund.

Scotland, Ont. driver Shone Evans, who pilots the Nathan Ackland Racing No.87, holds a narrow six-point lead at the top of the standings. Evans became the first three-time winner in series history with his latest win in the last trip to Humberstone on August 12. All three wins have come at different tracks, with his other two victories coming at Merrittville Speedway and South Buxton Raceway.

Chasing Evans is Ohsweken, Ont. native Aaron Turkey. The pilot of the Styres Racing No.68 is a two-time winner on the tour this season and has been in win contention nearly every night. Turkey scored a win at Humberstone in the tour’s first stop at the one-third mile bullring back on June 17. He also won the inaugural tour race at Ohsweken, his home track, where he has nine careers win, which bodes well for the chase for the championship.

The third driver with a legitimate shot at the series title is Port Colborne, Ont. teenager Jacob Dykstra. The driver of the Lakeshore Catholic High School Gators sponsored No.5d is also a two-time winner on the tour after scoring back-to-back wins at Merrittville and Ohsweken in a six-day span from July 28 to August 3. In the two series events at Humberstone, the 15-year-old has earned third- and fourth-place finishes. Just 16 points back of Evans for the series lead, Dykstra remains a legitimate threat to win the title, but will need to finish ahead of both drivers in each of the two remaining events to claim the championship.

On the outside of the championship picture looking in are Ryan Hunsinger and Brad Herron, who sit fourth and fifth in the standings, at least 88 points back of the lead and will need major help and likely a pair of wins in order to claim the title.

Sunday’s event is Rankin Construction night at Humberstone Speedway. Race time is 6:30pm and adult admission is just $12.
Danny O’Brien Claims 18th Top-Five of Season at Brockville

INVERARY, Ont. (August 21, 2018) – Danny O’Brien was back in action with his 1000 Islands RV Centre No.17d 358 Modified last weekend and the veteran racer battled through a good dose of adversity to achieve a fifth-place finish at Brockville Ontario Speedway last Saturday night. It was his 18th top-five result and 22nd top-10 of the 2018 season.

The night started with a second-place effort in his heat race. With his win last week, O’Brien was handicapped to start 12th in the 30-lap Feature. The car was strong in the opening laps until O’Brien felt something change in the rear-end.

“The car was good in the heat race and we just did our normal adjustments before the Feature. We had a torsion bar go bad early in the race and it was flopped over on the right-rear, so we had to battle all night,” O’Brien said. “We were lucky to get fifth. We’ll take that one. It’s still a good night.”

The task to drive through the field was significantly more difficult for O’Brien from that point forward, especially against the talented cast of Brockville regulars.

“It’s tough getting through the pack. It always is at Brockville,” O’Brien remarked. “There’s a lot of good cars and it was a good race. There’s a lot of really good cars and good drivers, so if you miss it by a bit you’re not going to win.”

The top-five came in the eighth race since O’Brien debuted a new car in July. Since that time, he already has five wins to make eight in total.

“This car is strong out of the box,” O’Brien said. “We brought it out eight races ago and its won five of them, so it’s got a good batting average. You can’t win every one though, so the one’s you can’t you just make sure you get every spot you can.”

After recording another top-five, O’Brien plans to head south of the border on Friday night, this time for competition at Brewerton Speedway, located just outside of Syracuse, NY, against the Big-Block Modifieds.

“We’re going to go to Brewerton this Friday,” O’Brien stated. “We want to get some running in on the softer tires down there and have some fun before Brockville Saturday. It’s a little different setup and a little different driving style, so we’re going to go down and get a run in on them. It’s a big-block track, so we’re not going to set the world on fire. We’re going to go down and have some fun.”

Other than continued competition at Brockville Ontario Speedway for the balance of the season, O’Brien does not have definitive fall schedule other than to say he will race where time and work permits, but also where it’s most enjoyable.

“We’re just going wherever it’s fun,” O’Brien said. “We’ve been doing that and having a lot of fun at it.”

For more information, visist www.dannyobrien.ca.

SEASON STATS
Danny O’Brien – 23 Starts: 8 Wins, 18 Top-5s, 22 Top-10s

DANNY O’BRIEN MEDIA
Website: dannyobrien.ca
Facebook: facebook.com/DannyOBrienRacing
Twitter: @dannyobrien17

Danny O’Brien is proud to partner with several dedicated marketing partners for the 2018 race season, including 1000 Islands RV Centre, Happy Green Acres Campground, MyFM 99.9 Gananoque, Pat’s Auto Centre, Bicknell Racing Products, Heather-Lynn Topping, Integra Shocks, Number One Speed Shock Service and Kenneth Topping.

About Clayton Johns Media: Clayton Johns Media provides smart motorsports media solutions through affordable public relations services, including professional press releases, social media management and training, and website maintenance.
Mack DeMan Scores Win in Inaugural Action Sprint Tour Stop at Brighton Speedway

BRIGHTON, Ont. (August 18, 2018) – Mack DeMan didn’t hold back at all in his return to Crate Sprint Car racing as the Mississauga, Ont. native started on the pole and led all 20 laps to earn victory with the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com at Brighton Speedway on Saturday, August 18.

Although it was DeMan’s first career start with the Action Sprint Tour, the veteran racer is no rookie as he is the all-time Crate Sprint Car wins leader at Ohsweken Speedway and recently graduated to become a 360 Sprint Car racer. DeMan also became the fourth different winner in 8 series races this season. DeMan was driving for his former full-time car owner, Daren Barr.

“It’s super cool,” DeMan said of the win in Victory Lane. “There’s so many talented drivers in this division. Jacob Dykstra and Shone Evans, these guys are going to be putting on a show in a 360 soon.”

“The track really changed tonight,” DeMan continued. “The bottom was quick early, but then the No.87x was on the outside and Dykstra was up there too. So I had to go try it too. It’s just a great win for the Barr family. This was my first time ever racing a dirt track that I like more than Ohsweken. What a great little bullring, great facility and the track prep was great. It was just a fantastic night all around.”

A fantastic crowd was on hand at Brighton to watch DeMan and Holly Porter bring the 18-car field to the green flag after both drivers declined the Durnin Motors Front Row Challenge and the chance to earn a bonus $500 if either could win from the 12th starting spot.

On the initial start, teenager driver Liam Martin of Binbrook, Ont. made contact with the outside wall and suffered damage to the car’s right front, ending his night. DeMan established a lead again on the restart with Porter and third-starting Jacob Dykstra giving chase.

The second caution of the race came on lap eight when Fonthill, Ont. driver Steven Beckett made contact with an implement tire which resulted in a broken left-front and ended his race early. DeMan was again the point man on the ensuing restart while Holly Porter maintained second, but with a narrow advantage over Shone Evans, who took third on the restart and quickly entered the battle up front after starting sixth.

On lap 14, Evans made his move on Porter to take the second spot and set out to track down DeMan while Dykstra and Hannah Ferrell raced in the top-five. The third and final caution came with 18 laps completed when Brian Nanticoke ended up facing the wrong way in turn four. Ferrell also took her Barr Motorsports No.4 pit side during the yellow, ending her race two laps shy of the scheduled distance.

The green-white-checkered finish produced an epic finish between DeMan, Evans, Porter and Dykstra. Restarting in fourth, Dykstra raced past both Evans and Porter to take second on lap 19. DeMan managed to hold off the fury of action behind him to score the victory, while Dykstra earned the runner-up spot ahead of Evans, Porter and Aaron Turkey.

Earlier in the night during heat race action, local pilot Brandon Murrell came together with Dereck Lemyre in turn four, resulting in Lemyre’s No.56 rolling on its side. Lemyre’s Burger Barn Racing team was able to replace the top wing and compete in the Feature event.

The Action Sprint Tour continues its inaugural season on Sunday, September 2 at Humberstone Speedway for its second-to-last race of the season before crowning the first champion at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, September 7.
_________________
Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com Race Report
August 18, 2018
Brighton Speedway – Brighton, Ontario, Canada
Total Entries – 18

Entry List
No. Name – Hometown
08 Steven Beckett – Fonthill, Ont.
1 Holly Porter – Delhi, Ont.
1eh Paul Klager – Beamsville, Ont.
3b Blaine Barrow – Welland, Ont.
4 Hannah Ferrell – Vanessa, Ont.
4b Mack DeMan – Mississauga, Ont.
5d Jacob Dykstra – Port Colborne, Ont.
9c Brian Nanticoke – Ohsweken, Ont.
12 Brad Herron – Waterford, Ont.
19 Brandon Murrell – Gores Landing, Ont.
28 Jordan Hill – Ohsweken, Ont.
29 Liam Martin – Binbrook, Ont.
43h Ryan Hunsinger – Stouffville, Ont.
49h Jerry Hill – Hagersville, Ont.
56 Dereck Lemyre – Hamilton, Ont.
68 Aaron Turkey – Ohsweken, Ont.
87x Shone Evans – Scotland, Ont.
88h Josh Hansen – Beamsville, Ont.

A-Feature (20 laps)
Finish. # Name (Starting Position)
1. 4b Mack DeMan (1); 2. 5d Jacob Dykstra (3); 3. 87x Shone Evans (5); 4. 1 Holly Porter (2); 5. 68 Aaron Turkey (9); 6. 88h Josh Hansen (7); 7. 28 Jordan Hill (14); 8. 12 Brad Herron (8); 9. 49h Jerry Hill (10); 10. 43h Ryan Hunsinger (12); 11. 19 Brandon Murrell (11); 12. 56 Dereck Lemyre (17); 13. 1eh Paul Klager (13); 14. 3b Blaine Barrow (15); 15. 9c Brian Nanticoke (18); 16. 4 Hannah Ferrell (6); 17. 08 Steven Beckett (4); 18. 29 Liam Martin (16)
A-Feature Lap Leaders – Mack DeMan 1-20
Hard Charger – Jordan Hill +7 (14th to 7th)

Heat Race No.1 (8 laps – Top 2 Redraw – All Cars Qualify)
Finish. # Name, (Starting Position)
1. 87x Shone Evans (1); 2. 4 Hannah Ferrell (4); 3. 88h Josh Hansen (3); 4. 49h Jerry Hill (6); 5. 1eh Paul Klager (5); 6. 29 Liam Martin (2)

Heat Race No.2 (8 laps – Top 2 Redraw – All Cars Qualify)
Finish. # Name, (Starting Position)
1. 5d Jacob Dykstra (4); 2. 4b Mack DeMan (1); 3. 12 Brad Herron (3); 4. 19 Brandon Murrell (2); 5. 28 Jordan Hill (5); 6. 56 Dereck Lemyre (6)

Heat Race No.3 (8 laps – Top 2 Redraw – All Cars Qualify)
Finish. # Name, (Starting Position)
1. 1 Holly Porter (2); 2. 08 Steven Beckett (3); 3. 68 Aaron Turkey (4); 4. 43h Ryan Hunsinger (6); 5. 3b Blaine Barrow (5); 6. 9c Brian Nanticoke (1)
_________________

2018 Action Sprint Tour Top-5 Points Update
Following August 18 at Brighton Speedway
1. 87x Shone Evans – 601
2. 68 Aaron Turkey – 595
3. 5d Jacob Dykstra – 585
4. 43h Ryan Hunsinger – 513
5. 12 Brad Herron – 503
_________________

2018 Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com Schedule
Fri.
Cory Turner Rolls To 11th Top-10 In Ohsweken Return

CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (August 13, 2018) – Cory Turner returned to the seat of his KT Tobacco/Silo Wireless No.97 360 Sprint Car this weekend and ran to an seventh-place finish last Friday night in the first 360 Sprint Car Feature contested at Ohsweken Speedway since July 13.

He started the night with a win in the first heat race of the night and we extremely pleased with how strong the car was as he outpaced Scott Kreutter to score the victory.

“The car was really good,” Turner said. “That’s definitely the slickest track we’ve seen in a heat race this year. I could put it anywhere and it would settle in and we would drive off. It was really good in the heat race.”

The heat win put Cory in the redraw where he grabbed the pole position for the 20-lap Feature race. Dylan Westbrook took the lead on the opening lap, but Turner stayed close with multiple slide job attempts to retake the lead.

“In the first five laps, we had a lot of drive,” Turner said. “I almost got back underneath Westbrook when he slid me for the lead in turns three and four for the lead. Then he came down to the bottom and we were in his tire tracks until the caution.”

The first caution of the race came at lap five and Turner did not feel his car was the same following the restart. He raced inside the top-five, but fell back to fourth and eventually to seventh in the closing laps following another restart on lap 11.

“I just never really got going after that caution,” Turner said. “Scott Kreutter and Mikey Kruchka got by me and then we just battled the rest of the race. It felt like it was shoving the nose in the centre of the corner. I was a little bit tight on entry and maybe I just tightened it up too much. When you’re tight on entry, then you’re loose on exit and it doesn’t have as much drive as it should have.”

The top-10 result was still a solid night for Turner, who gained valuable information for his notebook on a night where the racing surface foreshadowed the smooth, dry-slick surface that welcomes drivers for the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals each September.

“We won’t be using that setup for the Nationals,” laughed Cory. “The track was good. It was smooth and slick like we want. We just need to be a little bit better.”

The Feature was the first for the 360 Sprint Cars since July 13 after a pair of rainouts and a scheduled off week. Now, there are four points nights remaining, including a double Feature night at Ohsweken on August 25 to make-up the postponed race from July 27.

“It was good to get back, in that regard,” Turner said. “Hopefully we can have a clear stretch to the end of the year. We only have four points nights left, so hopefully we don’t have any rainouts and it should be good.”

Cory Turner will return to action on Friday, August 17 at Ohsweken Speedway at the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars take on the Southern Ontario Sprints in the second challenge race of the year. Race time at Ohsweken Speedway is 7:30pm. For additional event information, visit www.ohswekenspeedway.com. Ryan Turner led the way for TTR in his Burger Barn/King Pin Farms No.91 with a top-five finish while Cory Turner drove to a seventh-place result in the KT Tobacco/Silo Wireless No.97. Jamie Turner was 12th behind the wheel of the Charlie Bee Honey No.11 against a tough field of 22 cars.

Ryan Turner

Ryan Turner started the night with a sixth-place finish in his heat behind the wheel of his Aitken Motors/Ace 1 Construction sponsored car, narrowly missing a spot in the top-eight redraw.

“We had a solid car all night,” Ryan said. “We were decent in Hot Laps and in the Heat we started back in the pack. We kind of got held up early on and then it was a slicker track than what we are used to in the Heat Race. We were going ahead in a heavy-hitter heat. We just got sixth at the line on lap eight. We were alright, but we just missed the redraw by one spot.”

That put the No.91 ninth on the starting grid for the 20-lap main event. The initial start wasn’t exactly as Ryan envisioned, but the car got progressively better until he stole the fifth spot from Jim Huppunen over the final two laps.

“In the Feature, early on we started going backwards, but I found the high side in turns three and four,” Ryan recalled. “We really started to carry the momentum and started picking off cars. It took a bit to get going, but once I got going after about lap 10, we definitely wanted more laps at the end.”

The smooth, slick racetrack provided plenty of action for fans and was a favourite for the drivers as well.

“I definitely had a lot of fun tonight,” Ryan said. “I had to battle my way all the way to fifth. There were a lot of slide jobs back and forth on a great racetrack with a lot of clean racing. I had a blast. We definitely wanted a couple more laps at the end to see what we had, but we’re happy and we can build off that.”

The surface was also a preview of things to come at the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals when the track is always especially smooth and slick after two nights of Sprint Car racing.

“That’s a Nationals track,” Ryan said. “We’re going to go home and go over the car and see what we had and write it down and go from there. It was definitely a good night to learn. We’ve had heavy tracks all year, so a slick track was a good change and the fact that we were fast with a couple of guesses, let’s say, was good.”

Cory Turner

Cory Turner started the night with a heat race win in his King’s Wood Products/Mobil 1 No.97.

“The car was really good,” Cory said. “That’s definitely the slickest track we’ve seen in a heat race this year. I could put it anywhere and it would settle in and we would drive off. It was really good in the heat race.”

Cory earned a spot in the redraw where he pulled the pole starting spot. While Dylan Westbrook took the lead on the opening lap, Cory stayed close and made several slide job attempts to retake the lead.

“In the first five laps, we had a lot of drive. I almost got back underneath Westbrook when he slid me for the lead in turns three and four for the lead. Then he came down to the bottom and we were in his tire tracks until the caution.”

A lap five caution seemed to change the car on Cory as he lacked the same speed afterwards, but still came home with a seventh-place result, his 11th top-10 finish of the season.

“I just never really got going after that caution,” Cory said. “Scott Kreutter and Mikey Kruchka got by me and then we just battled the rest of the race. I don’t know if my tires sealed up or it just went away, but we were not good for the last three-quarters of the race.”

While Cory certainly would have preferred to be in the top-five with Ryan, he was happy to have gained valuable notes heading into the Nationals.

“We won’t be using that setup for the Nationals,” laughed Cory. “The track was good. It was smooth and slick like we want. We just need to be a little bit better.”

Jamie Turner

Jamie Turner had another strong night as well as he wheeled the Mudcat Entertainment Centre/Pyett Spring and Alignment No.11 to a fifth-place finish in his heat.

“The track was the best we’ve seen all year,” Jamie said. “It was super smooth. Hats off to the track crew, it was great. I started eighth and I got to fifth in the heat, so I made the redraw. I haven’t done that too many times this year, so that was good.”

The redraw placed Jamie fifth for the start of the Feature. He drove to a 12th-place finish at the end of 20 laps.

“In the Feature, I backed up a little bit, but overall it was a pretty good night,” Jamie said. “We brought it home in one piece. When you get the track nice and wide and smooth like it was, everybody is going to go everywhere and that’s why we’re here. It makes it that much more fun.”

It was also the second race where Jamie has run the chassis that Ryan started the year with. The car has been considerably more confortable for Jamie to drive, he said.

“I really like it. Ryan’s car kind of feels like home and I told him I’m not going to give it back yet,” laughed Jamie. “We’re just going to keep working on it. We have something to work off of, so we’re just going to keep going.”

Up Next

Team Turner Racing will return to action on Friday, August 17 at Ohsweken Speedway for Autograph Night and the Kids Race for the Canadian National Autism Foundation. It is also the second challenge race of the season at the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars take on the Southern Ontario Sprints. All three drivers look forward to meeting fans on the front stretch at intermission. Race time is 7:30pm.
Land of Legends Lends Learning Experience For Cory Turner

CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (August 8, 2018) – Cory Turner was back in the seat of his KT Tobacco/Silo Wireless No.97 360 Sprint Car last weekend and battled through a good learning experience during a trip to Land of Legends Raceway in Canandaigua, NY on Saturday, August 4.

Turner took on the always tough Empire Super Sprints where he timed in eighth fastest in his group, less than one-tenth of a second back of sixth, which happened to be the heat invert number to determine the lineups. Turner drove to an eighth-place finish in heat and was forced into the B-Main.

“There were a lot of good cars,” Turner said. “I wasn’t where I needed to be on the track in qualifying because I hadn’t been there in a year and a half. You only get two laps. If we had a Hot Lap session and then gone out for Time Trials, we would have been better, but it’s the same for everybody.”

Turner drove forward in the B-Main and late in the race made an important pass for second and the last transfer spot into the night’s main Feature event.

“We got everything together in the B-Main,” Turner said. “We just changed it and had way more drive. I didn’t get to second until about two laps to go. Even our B-Main was pretty tough. Matt Billings didn’t qualify and I drove around Jonathan Preston, so it’s not like we were racing against a bunch of slouches. There were guys that have won races this year.”

The track was what would likely be best described as “New York slick”, where the track was black enough driver’s could see their reflection underneath the lights, Turner said. Starting 24th in the A-Feature, Turner drove forward to 19th before an error in one corner cost him several spots.

“I was up probably five or six spots and then I got over the top in turns one or two and they all got back by me,” Turner said.

Ultimately, Turner finished in the same spot he started. The result of the race was not necessarily indicative of the trip’s productivity. Turner learned plenty about his own car and racing in the slick that will likely benefit come September’s Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.

“There’s some stuff I learned there that I could use for Ohsweken if it ever gets really slick like the Nationals,” Turner said. “That’s why the New York guys are good when they come to the Nationals, because they run on the slick all the time. It’s always good to go down and see where we measure up. We have some work to do in the slick.”

Turner is now set to return to action at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, August 10. No 360 Sprint Car Feature has been contested there since July 13 due to a pair of late evening rain outs and a scheduled off week.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to Ohsweken since we haven’t run an A-Main there in almost a month,” Turner said.

Race time at Ohsweken Speedway is 7:30pm.
Danny O’Brien Chalks Up Another Win at Brockville

INVERARY, Ont. (August 7, 2018) – Danny O’Brien turned in another impressive doubleheader weekend to start the month of August as the veteran driver of the 1000 Islands RV Centre No.17d DIRTcar 358 Modified raced to a pair of top-five finishes, including his seventh win of the season on Saturday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway.

O’Brien started the weekend with a trip to Can-Am Speeway in Lafargeville, NY where he earned a third-place finish in the main event.

“We started 10th at Can-Am on Friday night and got up to third,” O’Brien said. “The car was good. It was a one lane racetrack and hard to pass.”

On Saturday, O’Brien returned to Brockville where he notched a fourth-place finish in his heat race and moved on to start 10th for the 30-lap main event.

“There wasn’t a lot of passing in the heat races, so that lined us up 10th,” O’Brien recalled. “We just slowly picked away at it. There was one restart where there was some oil on the bottom, so I gained a few spots on the outside. Then we just started picking them off.”

The task to drive forward was a challenging one as O’Brien battled the tough cast of characters on a very dry-slick racetrack.

“It was very black,” O’Brien said. “It was heavy the week before because it rained. He was expecting rain this week on race day, but we didn’t get it. It was still a good, racey track from top to bottom, but it was typical summer dry and smooth, so that’s all that mattered.”

The winning pass came in the closing laps as Danny ran down his brother Tim to steal his seventh victory of the season and fifth at Brockville.

“(Tim) was going good this week and his car just started to fade late in the race,” Danny said. “I got him under green coming out of turn two on the bottom. Sometimes being second on a track like that is better than being first because you can move around and find different lanes. This one week that paid off.”

The win was also the 180th 358 Modified win of O’Brien’s career under the DIRTcar banner, moving him into third on the all-time win list.

“That’s pretty cool, considering a lot of my 358 career has been out of my own garage with my own guys, so it’s been without any big team sponsorship,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien plans to return to action at Brockville Ontario Speedway on Wednesday, August 8 for the 110-lap and $10,000-to-win “Bullringer” for 358 Modifieds. The DIRTcar Sportsman are also on the schedule for a 110-lap and $2,000-to-win race. Race time is 7:00pm.
