I think there is a place for the bump to pass, but only if a car is blocking early in the race, or if the driver doing the blocking is a known felon for being rough. Here's an interesting story when you think of "bump and run".
In last years APC 300 David was in second place with 25 laps to go, glued to Ron Sheridan but didn't touch him. A bump and run would have given David $7,500 more, the difference between 1st and 2nd. David had it figured out that if he was going to do it, it would be on the last lap. But!!!...racers earn respect from each other no matter how much is on the line. Ron ran me clean at Sauble Speedway during the Quaker State 100 earlier in the year. Ron got into 3rd on lap 22 and could have hit me to get me loose or whatever to pass, but it would have been an agressive move, plus we were running very good, but he still could have went in a little deeper and got me sideways to pass...he didn't, and David heard me rantinig about how the top cars ran very close and didn't hit each other. I was truly thankful to Ron for the way he raced me.....I rarely use that style of racing unless I go to pass someone on the outside and they take me into the cement, or chop me if I try to pass. I always give the car in front some grace the first few times but if he keeps it up it will be a "bump and run" for sure.
After the APC 300, Ron Sheridan said to the announcer "I just hoped David remembered how I ran his dad". David did, and maybe it cost him $7,500 but it gained him much more in respect.
Somehow 70 snuck up on me, but I'm still the 35 year old when watching an oval race. NO wrecks please....
Yeah...DB1 doesn't like too many race delays.
At his age he doesn't even buy green bananas.
😀
Having been the owner of a thunder car raced at a track known for wrecks I have a bit of a different take on things. Wrecking is not racing, it's wrecking and wrecking sombody is not racing them. Some might argue that but when you have a current champion drilling a 14 year old kid into the wall how can that be racing? This is what we were informed that racing was and the champion was "frustrated" and that was ok. So when you we spend the next 4 nights repairing the damage and countless dollars you kind of feel like not wanting to be involved. Repeat this situation over and over again and you will see what I mean.
Racing IS two cars running side by side, I might even go so far as to say a little nudge maybe warranted but drilling your competitors in the wheels, quarters and doors is not racing. The fans don't like it or else this track would have had more than 275 fans on a given race night. Lets keep the racing hard on the outside and there is no trophy for winning practise
Is DB71 trying to start something with that "catastrophic" stuff? ;D
I do agree with DB71 that the videos of late on the website have been focusing on wrecking and not the great racing that has been happening on the track. Although I get that the "wrecks" may bring people out and are part of racing, there needs to be a much more balanced approach to the videos showing the great racing first and then the wrecks, if aboslutely needed. I don't think the racing community wants to become like hockey in that the fighting seems to take precedence over the good hockey that is being played.
We need to focus on the good in racing and maintain the integrity of the sport, anything else could prove to be "catastrophic".
JMO.
