What was wrong with "vintage"? Most of the cars on the track were new right about the time Star Wars came out. ::)
Vintage reminds me of 1950's style coupes. I agree most people who are ignorant to racing have no clue towards Thunder, or any other class names. The people that need to know what they are, are racers. Guys from other tracks may actually come if they know their car fits the rules. If I hear there's a Vintage race Friday nights, And I own a real Vintage car.... I would be confused showing up that night. Is this silly? Maybe, but from a racer's point of view, I think sticking with standardised monikers is best.
good point Doug. You probably remember like me that Thunder Car originally was the moniker given to the pure stock class at Sunset. So pure, they didn't know if they were running clockwise or counter clockwise until feature time
All this would tell me that racers are easily confused...and I'm pretty sure that isn't the case. My own belief is that if guys from other tracks have an itch to travel, they'll know (whatever we end up calling them) that the class is our enduro class with a new name for Friday nights.
To call them Thunder car/thunder stock/whatever...nothing innovative there. Delly used to be the one setting precedents, not following everyone else's. Frankly I'm still trying to wrap my head around why anyone in the racing fraternity would even care what they call it.
Also, the name they choose...that's a marketing decision. It has to be something that will relay something to the average non-racer reading an ad or listening to a spot on the radio. Something that might entice them to come out and plunk down their 16 bucks to watch. "Thunder car" means absolutely nothing if you're not a racing person already. To the average joe it just says that they're thunderous....and that's false advertising. They aren't even that loud.
And I actually mostly agree on losing the "Vintage" moniker. (although its still better than some generic term for Street Stock.) Average age of race fans is older. Those mid 70s camaros might be vintage to a high school kid, but 40somethings would associate the term with coupes or even 57 Chevies and such.
An aside....Just thought of this...You know what would be fricken awesome? If Sid or Tony decided to come out with fiberglass renditions of the 57 chev, 58 Ford...that kind of thing, as a replacement body for all those Camaros.
Anyway, I'm not privy to the speedway's plans on this stuff, but I would imagine that some of the guys will be asked to clean their stuff up a little if they're gonna be regular on Fridays. There's a few of em that are so beat up they look like they came right out of a Mad Max movie.
And, if all those scratches and dents are a point of pride, then run with it. Call the division "Junkyard Dogs" or something catchy like that. (they can even play "Who let the Dogs Out" when they roll out the feature. ;))
Seriously though...they have an opportunity to make it cool. Let em' push the envelope a little on what to call it.
I added 'Retro Racers' to Delaware's Facebook poll.
