yes..its the "squiggly" rate.   😀

This is disturbing: I'm hearing a story of a bizarre incident with a senior official chasng a trailer out the back gate while brandishing a black flag at them. This is a team with a Harborne/Lawrence Spirit of racing award to its credit, as well as a crew cheif that does seminars on sportsmanship and fair play to the Junior racers on Wed nite.

That's only one side to the story, but I think its safe to say things got a little Twilight Zone-ish at Delaware last night.

I think EVERYONE needs to give their heads a shake. And I'm not just talking about the competitors.

I've been an infrequent observer of these boards for a while now but never felt compelled to post.  I guess as a fan and outsider I never felt I had much to add to "racer" discussions, but I was interested in reading.  However, and perhaps unfortunately, I witnessed some of the incident described above and when I saw mention of it here without much fanfare I was motivated to...I guess to confirm it happened.

I was doing the whole post-race pit visit with my son when it happened.  It was pretty shocking; a completely one-sided affair with the race team looking to leave and the official berating the people inside the truck, almost acting like he was hoping for a brawl.  I couldn't hear every detail but I did hear the official yell - in so many words - that this team would never set foot inside the speedway again under his watch, among other things.

I wasn't sure whether to be appalled, upset, or embarrassed.  But I left Delaware with a bitter taste in my mouth.  I wish I knew more of the context involved but regardless the official's behaviour was completely irrational.  Nothing I saw on the track warranted an official totally abandoning professionalism.  I told myself he had to be under the influence...it was the only way to justify what I saw.  The only thing missing from the act was a King Kong-type chest beating coupled with a roar when the race team left.

While I was engrossed in the display I didn't realize a couple people had come up beside me to watch until my son got my attention by tugging on my arm to ask what was wrong.  What I gathered from these folks was that this was merely round 2, with the official initiating his tirade in the pits before chasing down the hauler when the team was trying to leave.  Perhaps more disturbing was that no one else seemed all that surprised because this was apparently typical behaviour for this particular official - just one incident in a long line of disrespect.

All I know is that this is not the impression of authority I want my son to get.  And I feel bad for the team that was on the receiving end.  I don't care who you are, you just don't treat people that way or behave that way when you have the "NASCAR" and "Delaware" name all over your uniform.  I won't pretend to know how to run a racetrack, but this individual wouldn't be welcome on my team in the business world.

last time i checked flying into the pits is more dangerous than trying to get away from an idiot and since i said that i don't think the 60 did anything wrong wow he bumped the 97 little fender damage not a hole new nose cone. he didn't wait for the 97 to back into him and run him in the wall!! CHILDISH if u ask me

yes,2 wrongs,dont make it right....moving under the red,is a dq!!!just saying

your saying that flying into the pits sideways is equal to someone moving on a red?.... you must be related to silverthorn

no.not at all, hate the guy..drove me into the wall at Varney at the drop of the green!!!
rules are rules,if the 60 move under the red flag,he's gone...just saying spindocter,or is it jwo

I've been a long time 'reader' and sometime poster here at CRO. This whole thread with respects to what happened is borderline bizarre - for Delaware and the image / brand it has. That said, based on what I've read regarding this specific episode, this kind of stuff / stories / event is nothing compared to Bowman Grey Stadium shenanigans. The battle between the Myers Brothers, Brown and Jr. Miller is 20 times worse (for modern standards) and the officials have zero control. Winston-Salem Police practically have an office at the facility. Getting arrested is a ritual there. If you're not in handcuffs at least once during the season, you didn't didn't place in the top 10 🙂

That said, DMcCormick's post disturbs me - because he's right and no official or race team crew should display such actions - but they do happen. Humans are far from perfect and emotions can and often do, get the best of us, I seriously doubt it was something which happens regularly at any race track, let alone Delaware, but I haven't been to Delaware in years. Something obviously set off the official and provoked the response DMcCormick and son witnessed.

Anytime a fan comes into my pit area, I've always greeted them with a smile - especially if a young boy or girl are in tow and fascinated with all the machinery. If they get near the cockpit - then for sure, I make sure that they can go inside. The smile it puts on their face pays better dividends than anything else, even if I didn't do what well during the race.

I hope that DMcCormick continues to support Delaware Speedway and brings his son into the pits. I'm positive there are other teams that treat fans with smiles and answer questions and perhaps even satisfy a young man's (or girl's) curiosity about race cars as much as I do.

One day I'll get down there again...keep saying I will... and it's just gotta happen sooner rather than later.
