I wanted to share a quick regarding the passing of one of our racing community members. I have been informed that Bob Hewitt passed away earlier this afternoon.
Bob Hewitt was the driver of the #4 Super Stock at Delaware Speedway. His son Shawn Hewitt has competed recently in the #67 Super Stock.
Bob was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia on July 14, 2008. Tragically Bob’s wife, Sue, was previously diagnosed with Leukemia and lost her battle to the same blood cancer. Delaware race fans will be especially familiar with Bob as a result of the speedway’s fundraising campaign that took place on Friday, August 22, 2008 “Racing for Bob” ( http://www.youtube.com/user/RacingForBob ). I reported at the time that Bob had a statistically better chance of winning the lottery then getting that same type of cancer as his wife.
I know that the support of the racing community meant a lot to Bob and his family - - they expressed this to me on nearly every occasion I spoke to them.
I believe I speak for the racing community when I say that our thoughts are with Bob’s family at this difficult time.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
