I visit several racing sites on a fairly regular basis nascar.com , racingone.com thehotlap.com (formerly bgnracing) speedtv.com trackforum.com and others where i have hundreds and hundreds of posts over several years . Out of those hundreds of post of many many years i have received one warning from a mod for using a curse word once which i understand , it was a slip and has not happened again . Imagine my surprise when after not posting here a handful of times i had one of my post heavily edited for what seems no logical reason . I have gone back and reread the COC now three times and with the belief that i have reasonable comprehension skills and still see no violation of the COC.

Here is what i posted , in caps is what was edited out .

There are four Canadians registered so far for the ARCA race . Pierre Bourque ,Terry Jones , Ryan Fischer and Mario Gosselin . The only one that is truly competitive is Gosselin and he will be fast enough that he could win it . Bourque who will be 50 this year and has no super speedway experience i expect him to do about as well as he did in his Craftsman Truck debut at IRP last year CRASHED AND LAST. Terry Jones has run a half a dozen ARCA races but has only finished on the lead lap once which was at Winchester where he did run sixth being the last car on the lead lap . Only six cars did not blow up or were in a wreck that day but he did keep out of trouble all day at Winchester which is an accomplishment in of it self . Jones is sort of a cautious driver and maybe able to bring it home on one piece but i doubt it will be on the lead lap .Ryan Fischer has very little racing experience and i don't think he has even ever won a short track stock car race . This will be his third time in the Venturini Motorsports. His first time he barrel rolled it down the back chute at Gateway in a very big wreck . His second ARCA race was at Dega where he qualified last and just drove around at the back but since it was a cautionfest he never got lapped . He ran around 30th but the only cars behind him were missing fenders. I know he was fastest in single car runs for one session in Daytona ARCA testing but they only did tech for safety not to see if they were legal and i think there may have been a little somethin somethin going on there. My guess is that Ryan will finish on a roll back.RYANS DADDY HAS DEEP POCKETS AND CAN AFFORD TO RENT HIM ANOTHER CAR IF HE WRECKS THIS ONE .

Here are the results of Pierre Bourques Craftsman Truck Series debut which you can see was exactly as i described CRASHED and LAST
http://www.racing-reference.info/drivdet?id=bourqpi01&yr=2007&series=C

Ryan's father Claudio is very well heeled as anyone that knows him will tell you and did not seem phased in anyway after Ryan pretty much killed this car of Venturinis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Kmm7T8w4uI

I believe i was 100 % accurate in everything i posted if you would care to correct me on any fact you think i have wrong please do .

I don't think i am an overly critical person although i have been known to make statements such as DEIs engine program sucks after Junior blew his seventh engine of the season or that Kyle Busch drives like a fool after he wrecked his own brother in the All Star race . The race fans i enjoy speaking to are the most passionate and often the most opinionated . While i understand a certain decorum must be maintained on a message board i find the actions of this hill3 character to be heavy handed at best and the only thing accomplished by his or her actions was to kill what was an interesting discussion.

OK. Let's talk about some stuff.

There's been some tensions boiling beneath the surface here and we don't want that. I just want to clarify a couple of things that might help understand how this works.

Firstly, that post about "settling it with fisticuffs" literally slipped past us. I missed it, Evan missed it, and no one reported it. I didn't find out till later that something like that had even been posted. And unfortunately that thread seemed to be the catalyst for a lot of the BS that is happening now. (and mostly contributed to this underlying feeling that the OSS has some sort of "protected" status that seems to have ticked everyone off.) And for that I personally apologize. We missed it.

Having said that, If you see something that goes that far out of line, please report it. By the time it was pointed out to me the post had already been edited. It may be hard to believe, but even those of us who spend a lot of time on the boards do not sit here like lifeguards on a beach waiting for someone to step out of line. If you hit the "report to moderator" button, it goes right to all the mod's email.

Here's our usual MO:

When something is reported, or if one of us catches something that's iffy, we go to the mod forum and post something like "hey I just got this/noticed this. What do you guys think?"

Then we bounce it off the CRO Code of conduct. If it's coming close to a violation, we'll do a red text post with a warning. If its an obvious violation (ie, anything that someone who read the CoC would know wasn't kosher, but did it anyway), we'll warn/mute/ban the offender. If we're too late, and the thread got out of hand, then we'll state the violation in red and then lock the thread, so its still there and folks will know what we were thinking. The thread would notmally be deleted a day or two later. (I personally prefer to leave locked threads up, but the other mods/admin apparently have different opinions on that.)

I want to strenuously protest the notion that "If you don't agree on certain points, then you will be moderated" feeling that seems to be running rampant here. Its just not true. But there IS a Code of Conduct here at CRO. Its here, its staying, get used to it. No one said you can't voice an opinion. We only ask that you think before you hit "post", be respectful about it, and don't make it personal. Its rule 1. Are we censoring ideas? No. Are we enforcing rules? Yes, but only if you're being a jerk.

If someone posts something you don't agree with, and you begin to attack the poster instead of the idea, then you will be moderated.

If you swear, you will be moderated. (if you're not sure about swearing...check George Carlin's 7 words you cant say on TV...it applies here.)

If you trash talk, you will be moderated. (trash talking is trash talking even if you're not swearing...we enforce the spirit of the rules as well as the letter of the rules.)

We put that Code of Conduct up, and every single one of you agreed to it, or else you wouldn't be able to post here. So why complain when we enforce it?

Its all very simple.

This is an open forum that is visible to the world. We have standards we are trying to uphold. We are trying to make CRO a fun and informative place that people, tracks, fans, organizations and racers would like to participate in. (We'd love to see more fans. But the atmosphere here doesn't seem to allow for it) So, no...you CAN'T just say any old thing you like. It doesn't work that way.

We knew going in that guys would be resistant to the idea of moderation. So we're taking all this with a grain of salt. Growing pains happen.

But I'll make this deal with you: If anyone has a beef, or a question, then is the thread for it. Say what's on your mind. We won't moderate you unless you swear or attack anyone (mods included) personally.

Bear in mind though that if you say "The code of conduct sucks" or some such, we'll just ask why you agreed to it then.

So...if anyone has a question, fire away. I'll be on later to answer if I can.

But right now, I have a Christmas party to go to with a bunch of great friends that I'd have never known if it wasn't for CRO.

Talk to you soon,
Trev

The Canadian Racing Online Code of Conduct.

The Basic Rules

There are four basic rules here at the CRO message boards: Keep it respectful, keep it clean, keep it on topic, and keep it constructive. Those rules are essentially the same rules I, the admins, the mods, and you too most likely, use every day in the course of our duties. Following is a brief overview of each.

Rule 1 - Keep it RESPECTFUL.

Do - Engage, discuss, report, ask questions, and seek clarification. Please tell us your point of view. We're here to talk about racing.

But don't engage in - personal attacks, name-calling, judgements, or blanket generalizations. This extends to anyone, from the poster you are answering, to the promoter of a race track on the other side of the country. Its simple - don't bad mouth anyone. You can support, criticize, or discuss an idea, but we draw the line at "so and so is an idiot", as well as other "more clever" ways of saying the same thing. Feel free to criticize if you must, just do it in a respectful manner and don't make it personal.

Don't ascribe motives to the actions of others. This includes ascribing motives to drivers, fans, officials and track management or staff on things that happen on the racetrack or in tech. You probably don't know the whole story, even if you think you do. Tell us what you saw, tell us what the result was, but please don't try to tell us what the other guy was thinking.

Rule 2 - Keep it CLEAN.

Don't use obscenities, don't use clever tricks to run around the profanity filters, and don't link to sites with inappropriate content. The acid test we use is the "Coffee Shop Rule", as if you were sitting in a crowded Tim Horton's having a conversation. If its something you'd probably lower your voice to say, then best to use the PM feature. If you could say it in mixed company without lowering your voice, then its probably OK. We want Jr. racers' moms to feel OK about their kid hanging out here too. Bottom line...the CRO message boards are here for the whole world to see. How do you act around strangers and work acquaintances? That's how we'd like you to act here.

Rule 3 - Keep it ON TOPIC.

Ok, so it's not that we actually forbid off-topic conversation. But keep in mind that this is a racing site that focuses on racing in Canada, with sub-forums on related topics. Try to put your posts in the right forums (it helps people find stuff, for one thing); off-topic posts go in the Off Topic forum, for sale posts go in the classifieds.

And in this category we should mention the "no religion, no politics" rule -- Please refrain from discussion of a religious or political nature - just don't do it. We're here to talk racing.

Lastly, if you feel a need to carry on a one on one conversation with someone, please do it via PM or the chatroom. There's room for side comments, but if it gets out of hand and derails a thread, then it might be edited.

Rule 4 - Keep it CONSTRUCTIVE.

We're passionate about racing, just like anyone else. Sometimes when things don't go the way we think they should, people can get snarky and judgemental. While negativity is OK...once or twice...repeated negativity (ie, beating a dead horse) that is not constructive could bring warnings. If you're only here to complain, spread discontent, spread malicious rumors, bash (tracks or people) or only talk about how much things "suck", then please go somewhere else. We might have issue and you could be warned.

It is expected that if you have a beef with a particular track's management, its best that you contact them yourself and deal with it privately rather than airing your track's dirty laundry in a public forum. It is our hope to maintain a positive relationship with the various speedways, and allowing constant complaining on the boards, complaints often based on false assumptions and rumor, is not beneficial to that relationship. We have no interest in an "us vs them" mentality with regards to race track managers....we'd actually prefer to be working WITH them.

Regarding Moderators

What to Do If Another Poster Crosses the Line:

Simple. Report it. We have day jobs and don't sit at our computers 24/7. There's a little button on the lower left of any post that says "report to moderator". Use that, and we'll get back to you ASAP. However, please don't be offended if, in a given instance, the moderator doesn't agree with you. Sometimes personalities clash even when the rules are being followed. We can assure you that all of the moderators here do their best to be fair and frequently talk issues over amongst themselves.

With that in mind, we do have a couple of rules when it comes to moderators, and we ask you to abide by them:

1) Whether or not you agree with a moderator's stance, we do expect you to abide by their decisions and requests.

2) If you have a problem with a moderating issue, don't argue about it on the boards. That means no calling out of moderators and no challenging their decisions in the thread. Period. If you do it, expect your account to be suspended. Mods are human beings, just like you, trying to do the impossible. They don't get paid, and it is important that their job be as easy as possible. What this means is that you don't get to argue with a moderator publicly. Feel free to contact them by PM if you feel it is necessary.

3) Posting in RED text is reserved for moderator warnings. Our moderators are race fans too and will engage in discussions just like anyone else. When they post in red, its an official notice that someone has broken a rule or is coming close to breaking one.

4) Locked and Deleted threads. If something was offensive, it'll probably be deleted. Threads that simply get out of hand or degenerate too far from the original topic will probably be locked. Either way, you will be contacted via PM. Please don't try and resurrect an unaccaptable thread in a different thread.

What happens if I break the rules?

It depends. We may just email you, gently reminding you about the standard of conduct we expect here; we may post in the thread or topic if we feel it will help; alternatively, we may suspend your account, either temporarily or permanently.

The more posts you have accumulated, the less lenient we are likely to be. This is because we expect that any long-time member of CRO should know better.

Finally -- if you break a rule and admit to knowing it at the same time, we won't bother asking questions. Posts which include phrases like "this will probably get me warned or banned" show you're pretty much sticking your fingers up at the rules and the moderators, and will result in a banning. We probably won't even bother emailing you to let you know in these situations.

The moderators and their decisions (or "Rule 0")

This was touched on above, but deserves reiterating. Challenging a moderator publicly is not acceptable. They are human beings, just like you, trying to do the impossible. They don't get paid, and it is important that their job be as easy as possible. What this means is that you don't get to argue with a moderator publicly. You know the rules, and it is your decision as to whether or not you wish to post here.

Secondly, there is a very low tolerance for people who try to skirt the rules or seek loopholes. This is where "Rule 0" comes in - all of the above rules are really just guidelines to help you fit in at Canadian Racing Online. When it comes down to it, though, what we want you to do is use common sense, and moderators have the authority to do and say whatever is necessary to keep Canadian Racing Online the sort of place we want it to be. Think of them as race officials - yes, there are rules in the book, but the officials are the arbiters of what happens; if you don't like their calls, you don't have to race there.
